Frequently Asked Questions for Mothers

What is an Epidural?
Epidural anesthesia for childbirth is a procedure commonly used to relieve labor pain. After anesthetizing the skin, a needle is placed in the patient's back and then carefully advanced between the backbones. The needle must be advanced until the tip is in a narrow space called the epidural space. Next, a small tube is placed through the needle and into the epidural space and the needle is then removed. Medicine is administered through this tube to relieve the labor pains. Locating the epidural space requires skilled hands that can precisely advance the tip of the needle into the narrow epidural space and not any further.

What is a Dural Puncture?
If the epidural needle is advanced beyond the epidural space, it will enter the sac containing the cerebrospinal fluid. When this occurs, it is called a “dural puncture”. The incidence of an accidental dural puncture in labor patients is 1 – 3%. When a dural puncture occurs, there is a high probability that the patient will experience a severe and possibly debilitating headache. Treatment of this headache can require another procedure called an epidural blood patch to alleviate the symptoms.

Will my epidural feel different to me if Episure AutoDetect is used instead of a traditional epidural syringe?
No, from the standpoint of the patient, the epidural placement will feel exactly the same. You may have more peace of mind, however, knowing your Anesthesia provider has more control and sensitivity in guiding the epidural needle in your back, if they are using Episure AutoDetect.

Will the Episure AutoDetect work as well as a traditional epidural syringe?
Over 10,000 syringes have already been distributed in Europe and the feedback thus far has all been very positive. Feedback from the clinical trial of Episure AutoDetect has also been very positive. A larger multicenter trial is underway now and we are very confident that the results will again be favorable. Please refer to the Clinical Study section in our website for more details.

Why use Episure AutoDetect?
Indigo Orb designed the Episure AutoDetect syringe to give anesthesia providers more control during epidural placements. Episure AutoDetect allows the anesthesia provider to continuously keep both hands on the epidural needle as it is advanced in the back. Additionally, Episure AutoDetect gives the anesthesia provider an objective, visual indicator of when the epidural space has been reached, thus, eliminating the subjectivity required with traditional epidural syringes.
